Sinking Deep by Hillsong Young and Free
In a grace so relentless
I am won
By perfect love
In a peace that lasts forever
Sinking deep
In mercy’s sea
Drawing close
Stirred by grace
And all my heart is Yours
All fear removed
I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Oh, Your love
Lift my head to see Your glory
Lord of all
So beautiful
Captivated by the splendor
Of Your face
My secret place
Drawing close
Stirred by grace
And all my heart is Yours
All fear removed
I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Oh, Your love
Is washing over me
Your face is all I seek
You are my everything
You are my one desire
Lord hear my only cry
To know You all my life
Is washing over me
Your face is all I seek
You are my everything
Jesus Christ
You are my one desire
Lord hear my only cry
To know You all my life
Drawing close
Stirred by grace
And all my heart is Yours
All fear removed
I breathe You in
I lean into Your love
Oh, Your love
This Is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger
The King of Glory, the King above all kings
And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder
The King of Glory, the King above all kings
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You lay down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh, Jesus, I sing for
All that You’ve done for me
Who makes the orphan a son and daughter
The King of Glory, the King of Glory
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance
The King of Glory, the King above all kings
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You lay down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh, Jesus, I sing for
All that You’ve done for me
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
Worthy, worthy, worthy
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You lay down Your life
That I would be set free
Oh, Jesus, I sing for
All that You’ve done for me
Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin
But I’ve heard the tender whispers of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you’re pleased
And that I’m never alone
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
But I know we’re all searching
For answers only you provide
‘Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us
I, I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable
I, I can hardly thinkAs you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
Into love, love, love
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
And I’m loved by you
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am
It’s who you are, it’s who you are, it’s who you are
And I’m loved by you
You are perfect in all of your ways
It’s who I am, it’s who I am, it’s who I am

And make music with the heavens
We will sing, sing, sing
Grateful that You hear us
When we shout your praise
Lift high the name of Jesus
Heaven and earth adore You
Kings and kingdoms bow down
Son of God, You are the One
You are the One we’re living for
And make music with the heavens
We will sing, sing, sing
Grateful that You hear us
When we shout your praise
Lift high the name of Jesus
You are the light that leads us
Like a fire burning
Son of God, You are the one
You are the one we’re living for
And make music with the heavens
We will sing, sing, sing
Grateful that You hear us
When we shout your praise

SERIES: CHURCHED based on the book of Acts
JULY 19, 2020 | WEEK 5: Forgive Them
SCRIPTURE: Acts 7:54-60
54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Questions We Must Ask Ourselves:
- Can we forgive when people move from being upset to uncontrollable anger? v. 54
- Can we forgive when we are attacked even though we have done nothing wrong?
- Can we forgive even though we know the people we are dealing with have closed their hearts and minds to the truth? v.. 57
- Can we forgive when the treatment we receive is extreme, ridiculous, or both? v. 58, 59
Let’s talk about these questions in the context of Stephen’s response…
Obviously:
- Stephen is imitating Jesus because that is what Disciples do.
- This is completely against any logic that the world would use
- There is no one in the crowd who deserves to be forgiven.
- Stephens forgiveness is completely about his relationship with Jesus and has nothing to do with the reaction of the mob
Going Deeper Questions:
- How have you approached the below questions/challenges in the past and how can/will you approach them in the future?
- Forgiving when people move from being upset to uncontrollable anger? v. 54
- Forgiving when we are attacked even though we have done nothing wrong?
- Forgiving even though we know the people we are dealing with have closed their hearts and minds to the truth? v. 57
- Forgiving when the treatment we receive is extreme, ridiculous, or both? v. 58, 59
Why does forgiveness even matter???
- Forgiveness is more about your obedience to the Father and our relationship with Jesus than about anything else, even the people around you?
Matthew 6:14-15 New International Version (NIV)
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
How do you think forgiveness will change you?

Sunday Morning At Home
Grab Your Gear:
We recommend doing this one outside, because it’s a little messy! If you didn’t pick up your bag from Grab Your Gear, you’ll need ½ cup of vinegar, 3 tsp of baking soda, a tissue, and everyone will need to grab ¼ cup of warm water. While doing the experiment you can explain to your kids when we don’t forgive someone, it hurts us. It makes our anger boil up inside us and we may “explode”. Not forgiving ends up hurting us more. When we forgive we are able to let go of the hurt and pain, and move on with love and joy!
Directions for this experiment:
- Add 1/4 cup warm water to a plastic Ziploc sandwich bag.
- Vinegar is next. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the same bag.
- Measure out 3 tsp of baking soda and dump that in the center of a tissue.
- Fold up the tissue around the baking soda.
- I did not find that the explosion was very big, but please have kids use safety goggles if you are concerned.
- Working quickly, drop the folded tissue into the bag and close it completely.
- Step back.
- If the reaction doesn’t happen quickly, shake the bag to agitate it and start the chemical reaction

Summary:
This story is not easy to read, but it is very important to understand. There are people in the Church who are killed for their faith in Jesus. We are very blessed to live in a place where this does not happen to us, but that does not mean we shouldn’t be aware that it happens. However, this isn’t the point we are focusing on today. Today we are focusing on forgiveness. If you followed our virtual VBS we talked about how God gives us the power to forgive! We discussed how it’s a power God gives us, because it isn’t always easy to forgive those who hurt us- but it’s necessary to. Why? Because Jesus did it. I think Stephen is a great example too, as we read together. He was put to death for believing in Jesus, he did absolutely nothing wrong. But he forgave the people around him anyways. I truly believe that when we forgive others we are tapping in to an important part of who God is. He forgives us, the ultimate forgiveness through sending His Son. We get to come before Him, confess our sins, and be forgiven daily. This doesn’t give us the right to do whatever we want, but it does give us the opportunity to be more like Him and also forgive people who do wrong against us daily. May we commit to being more like Jesus and forgive people who become angry with us, who hurt us, who attack us when we’ve done nothing wrong, and even when it’s hard.
Activity:
Forgiveness is key when we want our heart to look more like Jesus’. For the activity, draw a heart and write in it times you’ve forgiven someone or you’ve been forgiven. Fill your heart and let it serve as a reminder of how forgiveness can change our hearts!
Discussion Questions:
- Why do you think it can be hard for us to forgive people?
- How can we work on being more forgiving?
- When was a time you were forgiven? How did it make you feel?
- When was a time you forgave someone? How did that make you feel?

Welcome to Real Thoughts!
Challenging Our Students to Engage and Go Deeper in Their Faith Through Thought Provoking Prompts and Ideas.
In light of our temporary shift to online platforms, we are still looking to provide students with the opportunity to dive into the text and explore the faith through these conversations, but with their families now! We encourage each of our students to engage in the main worship service with their families while using their YMJ’s (Youth Ministry Journals) to flush out how the conversation from stage relates to them and where they are in their faith walk. The hope is that, in so doing, students will find themselves more ready to engage in conversation about the lesson with those around them, having gained a better understanding of what it is that the lesson means to them. So, join us this week as we continue in the conversation on the Book of Acts!
Key Passage:
Acts 7:54-60
Food For Thought
-
- When was a time when someone did something that made you so angry you refused to forgive them? What was so bad that you felt like you couldn’t forgive?
- When was a time when you did something that someone still hasn’t forgive you for?
- What should our response be when we face those moments when we are so frustrated it feels like we very likely might just explode?
- What makes it hard to forgive someone?
- What makes it hard to ask for forgiveness?
- Just like Jesus, we see Stephen asking for God to forgive those who were literally killing him. What can we take away from this story?
- What does it mean to offer forgiveness to someone even if you think they won’t change?
- God forgave us even though each one of us have sinned beyond measure. Yet, He forgives us every single time. Brainstorm some things in your journal that you can do/use to remind yourself to forgive even when it’s hard.
