JULY 12, 2020 | WEEK 4: Full of the Spirit and Wisdom
SCRIPTURE: Acts 6:1-5
In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”
5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
Discipleship:
+ Growth occurs when we see opportunities rather than obstacles
There are a few opportunities that emerge here:
- the 12 use this conflict to teach that everyone has a role and the best solution is to, as some say, to “stay in our lanes” –
- the 12 also see it as an opportunity to point out, whether we like it or not, some things are more of a priority than others – distribution of food is important, but if we don’t teach why we distribute food we are simply a service organization.
- the 12 see an opportunity to teach that we should not choose people for positions with the criteria the world uses! They are told to choose those who will not only understand how to do what needs to be done, but why it needs to be done.
- the 12 see an opportunity to teach that God is in control and that when we work together in Him we can handle what others might see as obstacles – this i believe the number is 7 and they are not commissioned without prayer.
+ Discipleship must be evident in our lives
- These men belong to Jesus – this is the only way one can be full of the Spirit.
- These men must rely on the wisdom of God over the desires or complaints of the people around them. This means that they are more concerned about doing what is right than making people happy, because you can’t make someone happy, it is a choice – think about this scenario, someone is going to be unhappy the Hellenistic jews could say that their complaint wasn’t heard, the Hebaric jews could say their widows are still not getting enough, one group could say that they weren’t trusted, another could say the whole thing was blown way out of proportion – you know it happens – Doing what is right regardless of the outcome requires wisdom
- Our calling comes with responsibility and so it is important to understand how Jesus wants us to respond – the only way to know this is to be fully committed to learning what this life looks like and following that lead to the best of our ability – this is what Discipleship is.
Conclusion: The Kingdom works best when we work together.
When we look out for others we come closer to the heart of God because that is exactly who He is, the Father who cares for others.
Going Deeper Questions:
- Are you a person who sees the cup as half empty or half full and why?
- What do you think it means when “stay in your lane” is said?
- How does this apply to our relationships within our Church?
- We often find people who are doing 9 different things to serve and be there, which means we aren’t doing 9 things well.
- How does this help us in our ministries?
- Read Simple Church if desired to continue to learn and grow in this area.
- How does this apply to our relationships within our Church?
- How can we justify, in the Church, saying some things are more important than others?
- Explain why we need people to understand why they’re doing what they do, and why they should be able to explain it to others.
- If we don’t teach why we are doing certain ministries, then the ministries we are doing don’t make any sense.
- Explain why we need people to understand why they’re doing what they do, and why they should be able to explain it to others.
- How can we share what we are doing and how it aligns with our mission statement? (Example: distributing food)
- How do we demonstrate that discipleship is evident in our lives?
- How can we resist being influenced by the desires and complaints of the people around us?
- Colossians 3:17
- What does the Church feel like it’s main responsibility is?
- In all of this, how does this lesson be a disciple and make disciples?

Sunday Morning At Home
Grab Your Gear:
One way we can connect with the Spirit and show discipleship daily in our lives is being connected and showing the Fruits of the Spirit! For this week’s Grab Your Gear, you have a different activity for every fruit of the Spirit! Use these to help you figure out more of who the Spirit is and to show the discipleship you have daily for Jesus!
Worship Songs:
Summary:
Today’s sermon is all about wisdom and the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is something that is given to us by God when we fully accept Him and are baptized. The Spirit helps guide us. Have you ever felt a nudge to talk to a friend, help someone out, or tell the truth? That’s the Spirit! Today focuses on the Spirit, because the sermon is all about helping us be a disciple and grow disciples. Remember: a disciple is someone who is devoted to Jesus and His teachings. The first point of the sermon focused on how growth comes when we look at hard times as opportunities instead of obstacles. Every situation we face is one God can use to help us grow and become more like Him! Isn’t that the goal? It should be! The next part talks about discipleship must be present in our life. If we want to grow in wisdom and with the Spirit we must be about discipleship, which means we are about learning and growing to be more like Jesus. Why is this all important though? Why care? Well, when we are all working to be more like Jesus we start working together. And when we work together the Kingdom is working at it’s best. God didn’t intend for our lives to be a one person show, He wants us to come together and work together to tell the world about Him!
Activity:
You choose! Today you choose your activity, but the only catch- you can’t do it alone! Choose an activity that your sibling(s) or parent(s) can do with you. While you’re enjoying the activity, make sure you’re working together- which may include working together to even choose the activity.
Discussion Questions:
- How did working together help the activity you chose?
- How can you change your mindset to look at hard times as opportunities?
- How has God helped you grow in hard times in the past?
- How is discipleship present in your life now?

Welcome to Real Thoughts!
Challenging Our Students to Engage and Go Deeper in Their Faith Through Thought Provoking Prompts and Ideas.
In light of our temporary shift to online platforms, we are still looking to provide students with the opportunity to dive into the text and explore the faith through these conversations, but with their families now! We encourage each of our students to engage in the main worship service with their families while using their YMJ’s (Youth Ministry Journals) to flush out how the conversation from stage relates to them and where they are in their faith walk. The hope is that, in so doing, students will find themselves more ready to engage in conversation about the lesson with those around them, having gained a better understanding of what it is that the lesson means to them. So, join us this week as we continue in the conversation on the Book of Acts!
Key Passage:
Acts 6:1-6
Room For Thoughts:
Food For Thought:
- Do you have a tendency to see the adversities in life as opportunities or obstacles?
- How does your answer, to the above, affect how you approach your day to day life?
- If something doesn’t go the way you had hoped, how can you learn from that opportunity?
- If something doesn’t go the way you had hoped, how can you trust God?
- Living with an optimistic worldview is a choice. While some may have a more natural tendency to be optimistic, many struggle to choose to naturally. How are you choosing not just to remain positive, but to remain hopeful in God?
- The disciples knew their calling and that, in order to meet the needs of the people, they would have to employ the help of someone else more gifted in the needed area. We are all called to a unique role that is equally important for the health and success of the church. Where is it that you feel you might be best equipped to serve?
