Day 4 – Christ is Preparing a Place for Us
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. – John 14:2-4
It’s difficult to adequately describe the wonder that should be evoked in each of us when we read these words. Statements like these are often completely passed up because we hear and read similar promises frequently in Scripture. Yet, how would it shape our understanding of the gift that is Jesus if we were to stop and truly reflect on the weight of these words?
Jesus, the Son of the one, true, living God who created the entire universe and all that is within it, is preparing a place for each of us in the house of God. Not only that, but it goes wondrously further. Jesus has promised to temporarily leave the throne room of His Father to descend from heaven and come back to take us to be with Him in that place.
This statement should leave us awestruck by the wondrous glory of God, the tender and caring love of Jesus, and the monumental gift we’ve been given because of Him.
At this very moment, Jesus is preparing a place for you and for me in the house of God.
A few short verses later, Jesus tells His disciples, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” When Jesus says, “You know the way to the place where I am going,” He is saying “You know ME. I am the way!”
So this monumental gift we’ve been given is that we know Jesus. We know the way to the Father. We have a home that is being prepared for us in the house of our Father. It is not because of anything we’ve done, said, thought, or earned. It is rooted in the incarnation of Jesus as a man, so that we could come to love and know Him.
Because we know Jesus, He is preparing a place for us to dwell with him for eternity in the house of God.
Action Step: Read Philippians 3:17-21. What do these verses tell us about the attitude we must have while we look forward to the place Jesus is preparing for us? Respond in prayer to God, with humility and gratitude for the gift of knowing Jesus, and with praise and expectation for a place uniquely prepared for us.
