Read today’s scripture: Luke 1:39-45
The most unlikely meeting is captured here for us to read. Elizabeth, Mary’s dear cousin, was close to 6 months pregnant with her son, John. This baby was a true miracle–Elizabeth’s womb had been empty well past her childbearing years. This is uncharted territory for Elizabeth. A baby? Now?
Mary is just a child herself. Her unplanned pregnancy probably sparked more than one ugly rumor and invited judgemental side-eyes to make unwelcome and inappropriate comments. A baby? Now?
But, oh, there is beauty here. These two women, carrying the most precious gift with their bodies, where not left alone. Mary went to Elizabeth; for solace, for safety, for comfort. They spent sweet time together and exclaimed with boldness the wonderful things that God was doing through them. These circumstances were wild and unlikely, and yet, we find comfort and joy. That is the beauty of our Father. We were made for community that glorifies Him. To surround ourselves with people who help us see Him, even when it’s hard. When Mary needed to see God most, Elizabeth reminded her of His plan and promises. What comfort and joy!
